Jaz led a Workshop as part of UCU’s ‘Re-Humanising the University’ Teach Out today. He noted that reports by the Equality and Human Rights Commission have listed Coventry University within the top 10 in the UK for numbers of racial incidents reported, so this is a real issue. While the University Management will claim it addresses incidents of racism, there is serious disinterest in looking at the structures which perpetuate this. As a start, we would note that the Senior Management group is entirely white and male. With such a diverse staff group, why is this? We have amongst our UCU casework a preponderance of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members who experience difficulties at work. Why is this? Our evidence shows the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members believe it is much harder for them to be promoted, especially within the CORE/Clear Review system; and it is revealing that management won’t even share the statistics they have gathered on this with UCU. In UCU we believe racism at Coventry will not be tackled until Management cease to be in denial about the discriminatory structures perpetuated by the way the whole University operates.
