We had lots of really good discussions with students today and throughout our dispute. What’s clear to us is that is that as a teaching trade union we have a lot in common with students, and that many of them can see the way they are constructed as ‘consumers’ of education distorts the real purpose of education.
Paulo Freire is a founding figure of “Critical Pedagogy”, an educational philosophy that calls for critical as opposed to the instrumental education promoted in today’s marketised university. For the new breed of highly paid Senior Managers and Faculty Deans, scoring good results in student satisfaction league tables is far more important than the substance of what we actually teach. Paulo Freire would probably say if we care about education we need to fight this!
